Using Pattern Rulers – The French Curve

Not all French Curves are created equal. After trying many of those for tops, the Lance FC-1 9″ has been a tried and true French Curve. It’s perfect for armholes and necklines, and it works wonders for both front and back pieces of your patterns.

It’s such a simple but super helpful thing to help you get those beautiful shapes as a starting point in your patterns. You may end up altering the pattern as you go through your muslin prototype phase, but this is always my personal way to start. One tip is: since this tool is completely transparent, write your name on it, add a sticker or do something to make it not completely clear, otherwise, it’s so easy to lose in creative messes (I mean, creative flow states 😂) 😆 You can also loop a string through and hang it, so it’s easier to find it in its place.

When using this French curve correctly, you could easily get your neck and armhole lines down in just one or two swoops.
